“Shelter” is a noun that means, “a place giving temporary protection from bad weather or disaster”. To begin to understand the spaces that emerge within a self-sufficient home, it is not enough to study asylum in a theoretical context: one must think about autonomy in natural habitats.
Allowing for flexibility and future growth are important principles in designing shelters for victims of natural catastrophes. One must use flexible methods of manufacturing that will permit all of the space to be flexible and to change function.
Another important principle is designing so as to allow a sense of temporary community. A sense of community is key to the survival of settlements of displaced persons.
Designing for emergency situations in unstable environments is highly complex. It is also important to develop design and fabrication specifications for large-scale disaster relief shelters.

“Refugio” es un sustantivo que significa “un lugar que ofrece protección temporal del mal clima y desastres”. Para empezar a comprender los espacios que surgen dentro de un hogar autosuficiente, no solamente se requiere del estudio de aislamiento dentro de un contexto retórico: Uno debe pensar en la autonomía de viviendas naturales.
El permitir flexibilidad y crecimiento a futuro son principios importantes en el diseño de refugios para victimas de desastres naturales. Uno debe de usar métodos flexibles de manufactura que permitan que todos los espacios sean flexibles y que cambiantes de acuerdo a su función.
Otro principio importante es el diseñar para permitir un sentido temporal de comunidad. Un sentido comunitario es la llave para la supervivencia de asentamiento de personas desplazadas.
El diseñar para situaciones de emergencia en medioambiente inestables es altamente complejo. Es también importante desarrollar diseños y fabricaciones especificas para refugios de ayuda humanitaria en desastres de gran escala.
